Opening March 5, Sailing into Spring features Mears’ latest mixed media paintings alongside glass sculptures, filling the gallery at 6432 N. Western Ave. with color and movement. The show runs through March 28.
Timed with the arrival of brighter days and early blooms, the exhibition centers on floral imagery interpreted through Mears’ energetic, abstract style. The works — created on canvas, paper and board — layer fluid acrylics, oil stick, alcohol inks and pencil into textured, expressive compositions. Several pieces are finished with multiple coats of resin, creating a glossy surface that adds depth and luminosity.
Though many collectors know Mears for her fused glass, painting has long been part of her creative vocabulary. Over the past 25 years, she focused primarily on glass, a technically demanding medium that requires precise kiln work and timing. With this exhibition, she returns more fully to painting, carrying over the same bold color palette and sense of spontaneity that define her glass pieces.
That connection is visible throughout the show. Glass sculptures of cresting waves and sailboats are displayed alongside the paintings, nodding to both the exhibition’s title and Mears’ established reputation in glass. Together, the works create a conversation between mediums — one rooted in motion, light and saturated color.
An opening reception is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 5, at Howell Gallery. For more information, contact the gallery at info@howellgallery.com or 405-840-4437.
