Artists seeking to strengthen their portrait drawing and painting skills will have the opportunity to learn from nationally recognized instructors during Mastering the Portrait, an intensive two-day workshop at 1515 Lincoln Gallery on Saturday and Sunday, September 12–13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Presented in collaboration with Faculty from Studio Incamminati, Philadelphia, the workshop will be taught by Annalisa Shanks, Alexander Shanks, and Stephen Bush—three accomplished realist painters and educators whose work continues the tradition established by master portrait artist Nelson Shanks.
Participants will work through the complete portrait process, from establishing gesture and light to developing form, color relationships, edge control, and refined finishing techniques. Through demonstrations and individualized instruction, artists will gain practical tools to strengthen both technical ability and artistic confidence.
“Mastering the Portrait” is designed for artists looking to deepen their understanding of classical realist portraiture while working alongside experienced instructors in an immersive studio environment.
The workshop is $350 for both days. Seating is limited, and advance registration is required.
In conjunction with the workshop, 1515 Lincoln Gallery will present The Shanks Family Tradition, an exhibition celebrating the artistic legacy of the Shanks family. The exhibition runs September 10–26, with an opening reception on Thursday, September 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to attend the reception and explore the exhibition before the workshop weekend.
