Rex’s Trek is trying to make that wish come true with a campaign to raise money to bring a male elephant named Rex to the Oklahoma City Zoo. It zoo already has three female elephants, Asha, Chandra and Malee, with whom Rex could mate.

“I think he will fit in well. He was recommended to our zoo to come and breed with Asha and Chandra,” said Brianne Hinojosa, Oklahoma Zoological Association marketing and development coordinator.

The association seeks $10,000 to pay Rex’s traveling expenses.

“The expenses are so much partly because he’s such a large animal and there are certain licenses we have to get since he is coming from Canada,” Hinojosa said.

Once he arrives, Rex will be in quarantine for 30 days to adjust to his new home. He then will be able to frolic with his fellow pachyderms.

The zoo isn’t sure of when Rex will make his journey, but people can donate money through the end of the month at the ZooFriends membership office, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the zoo, 2101 N.E. 50th.
