OKC elementary student wins prize for pizza story

An 8-year-old ClevelandElementary School student won the top prize among third-graders in a short-story contest sponsored by PBS.

According to a press release, for the "Reading Rainbow Young Writers Contest," Hannah Carlson entered her tale about "a pizza family living at CiCi's Pizza. "¦ Her story features five family members representing different slices of pizza that are available on (the) CiCi's buffet, including a spinach Alfredo."

Now, as much as you'd expect Chicken-Fried News to make fun of that, we can't. Because it has originality.

After all, how many William Bernhardt thrillers have dealt with a deadly conspiracy in Washington, D.C., involving a corrupt politician? Practically all of them, right? But how many William Bernhardt thrillers have dealt with a deadly conspiracy in Washington, D.C., involving a zesty slab of pepperoni? We rest our case.

So bravo, Ms. Carlson, as you embark on your writing career. Just don't let us catch us you getting arrested for DUI twice in one month. Because then we might have to make fun of the certificate you won signed by actor LeVar Burton " "Star Trek" is for nerds, you know.
