Oklahoma City drivers have a new traffic pattern to navigate as the city’s first double roundabout officially opens at the intersection of NW 10th Street, Pennsylvania Avenue and Virginia Avenue.
Nicknamed “The Peanut” because of its unique shape, the new intersection is designed to improve safety, traffic flow and mobility for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. The project transforms the busy junction of three arterial roadways into a double roundabout that allows traffic to move continuously rather than stopping at traditional signals.
City officials say the design reduces the number of conflict points where crashes can occur and encourages slower vehicle speeds. Roundabouts are also known to reduce the risk of serious and fatal collisions by limiting high-speed, right-angle crashes commonly found at traditional intersections.
In addition to safety improvements, the new configuration is expected to help reduce traffic delays and vehicle idling by keeping vehicles moving through the intersection.
Drivers approaching “The Peanut” should slow down and be prepared for the new traffic pattern. Motorists should yield to vehicles already circulating in the roundabout, choose the correct lane before entering and follow pavement markings.
Drivers should not stop while inside the roundabout unless necessary to avoid a collision and should use turn signals when exiting.
The double roundabout is part of Oklahoma City’s continued investment in transportation infrastructure designed to support growth, improve mobility and create safer roadways throughout the city.
City officials encourage residents to use caution and patience as drivers become familiar with the new intersection. As with any new traffic design, officials say it may take time for motorists to adjust to the updated route.
