OKC Walking Club provides free fitness program around Lake Hefner

With the start of the OKC Walking Club, everyone in the metro and surrounding communities can reap the benefits of starting a walking regimen.

The club had its first meeting June 2, and since then, has grown to include 11 members. Kevin Jaeger is the founder of this free, fitness-concentrated group. He owns Foot Solutions, a footwear specialty store in Oklahoma City, and said his customers inspired him to create a club specifically for walkers in the community.

Responding to the growing demand for a more social and organized way to implement an exercise routine, Jaeger heads up the club, which meets 7 p.m. every Monday at Lake Hefner, in the Louie's parking lot. The evening walkers first stretch and discuss a health topic related to walking. The 30-minute-to-one-hour walks are then led by Jaeger through the lakeside trails, providing an ideal setting for the members.

"The sun's beginning to set, so it's beginning to cool off and there's always a nice little breeze coming off of the lake," he said.

FOOT SOLUTIONS
Through a Foot Solutions program, Jaeger is a certified walking coach and he said his role as founder and coach of the club is to ensure that members get their questions answered and have help and encouragement as they embark on a fitness program.

"I want to be there for people if they have additional questions, or at least guide them to the right source," he said. "We really want to be able to help people get started on a walking program."

Membership is free, and Foot Solutions sponsors the club, providing complimentary water and giveaways at each meeting. "Renee Selanders
