Making a writing/directing debut, Michael Morrissey shows talent in the look of his film, but deficiencies in scripting and pulling believable performances from his mostly unknown cast. Lanky Caleb Steinmeyer, who’s had only one-and-done roles on a few popular TV series (and, tellingly, worked as a behind-the-scenes assistant on one of the worst movies I’ve […]

3 by Theo: The Theo van Gogh Collection
The Dutch auteur was assassinated seven years ago by a Muslim extremist in response to a short van Gogh had made about Islam’s treatment of women. That work is not among the trio featured on the triple-disc set “3 By Theo,” and that’s probably for the best, but what is here still demonstrates the man’s […]

Adventures in Pornoland
Wouldn’t you want to know that? Ethan (Brad Brough) and Jaime (Taryn O’Neil) move from Vancouver to Los Angeles for Ethan to chase his dream of being a movie director. He has this inkling to shoot a drama that would just happen to have some real sex in it, as opposed to a porno, which […]

Take Shelter
The indie drama is scheduled to open Friday at AMC Quail Springs Mall 24. Strangely, Curtis (Michael Shannon, TV’s “Boardwalk Empire”), a blue-collar worker in a small town in Ohio, is the only one who notices how different the drops are. That’s because it’s just a dream. Trouble is, his dreams have seeped over into […]

The Sleeping Beauty
It’s also schizophrenic and messy, but that’s beside the point. In the French film (if you saw “French” and immediately thought, “nudity,” thumbs up), a newborn princess named Anastasia is cursed by the fairy (witch?) Carabosse (Rosine Favey, “Frontier(s)”) to die when she hits her sweet 16, “her hand pierced by a yew spindle.” Meanwhile, […]
