For the first time since 2019, Avengers: Endgame is returning to theaters for an encore theatrical run beginning Sept. 25, with screenings available in formats including IMAX and Infinity Vision.
The same movie that once brought audiences together is returning, but this time it also serves as a bridge to Marvel’s next Avengers story.
Endgame originally premiered in April 2019 and concluded a major chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Its release became more than a film premiere. It became a cultural event that brought longtime Marvel fans back to theaters to witness the conclusion of 21 connected films that led to it.
The road to Endgame began in 2008 with the first Iron Man movie. On this journey, Marvel introduced multiple new characters that each had their own film. There were also three Avengers movies that helped build toward the events of Endgame. That buildup reached a point in 2018 with Avengers: Infinity War. The movie brought many characters together and left audiences with a cliffhanger waiting for the next part of the story.
Endgame broke records in dozens of countries. The opening weekend reached a total of $1.2 billion globally and $357 million domestically. The film reached this mark in five days. The film was the first in history to surpass $1 billion in the opening weekend.
The film’s impact reached beyond its box office numbers. The atmosphere inside theaters became part of the experience, as fans came prepared to watch their favorite characters and witness the conclusion of a story they had followed for years. Before the release, demand for tickets had grown so high that theaters were selling out shows at unusual times such as 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. for a three-hour film. Fans also took to social media to post pictures and videos of themselves dressed as their favorite characters. Inside theaters, videos showed large crowds cheering loudly for character appearances and major moments throughout.
Fans will have the opportunity to experience the atmosphere and shared history again on Sept. 25 for the encore release of the movie. This time around the film will feature extra scenes that were previously not included. Marvel is known for its use of mid- and post-credit scenes that tease upcoming connections in their projects. This version of Endgame will feature new content that will directly tie into the release of Avengers: Doomsday on Dec. 18. Anthony and Joe Russo directed both Infinity War and Endgame. The brothers also directed the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled for release in December and the 2027 release of Avengers: Secret Wars. The brothers said that this encore release is “required viewing” before seeing Doomsday.
People remember when they first saw the movie, who they saw it with and, for some, how many times they saw it. Seven years later, the encore release will give fans a chance to watch one of their favorite stories and give younger audiences a chance to see it for the first time. The new material included will give people a reason to go beyond the nostalgia that comes with it.
For fans who have followed Marvel since its beginning, that connection is especially noticeable through Robert Downey Jr. In 2008, he first appeared as Tony Stark, launching the journey of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, Downey is confirmed to appear in Doomsday as Doctor Doom. There have been mixed reactions to the casting among Marvel fans. The Russo brothers have said that Downey is the “one person who could play Victor von Doom.”
The encore will screen at theaters across the Oklahoma City and Tulsa areas, including AMC Quail Springs, Harkins Bricktown, Showbiz Cinemas Edmond and Cinemark Tulsa.
