Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma will conclude its 2026 summer season with Stephen Sondheim’s acclaimed musical thriller Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, running July 28 through Aug. 2 at Civic Center Music Hall.
Directed by Lyric Producing Artistic Director Michael Baron, the limited one-week engagement brings Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning musical to the stage with one of the largest casts in the company’s history. The production features 52 performers, including members of Canterbury Voices, Oklahoma City’s premier symphony chorus.
The story follows Sweeney Todd, an exiled barber who returns to Victorian London’s Fleet Street seeking revenge against the corrupt judge who destroyed his family. Along the way, he forms a notorious partnership with pie shop owner Mrs. Lovett, leading to one of musical theatre’s darkest and most unforgettable tales.
Husband-and-wife actors Scott Guthrie and Lindsie VanWinkle-Guthrie lead the cast as Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett. Guthrie most recently appeared in Lyric’s The Play That Goes Wrong, while VanWinkle-Guthrie previously starred in Waitress.
“We have created a production of Stephen Sondheim’s masterpiece, as only Lyric can, in epic proportions,” Baron said. “Featuring a cast of 52, including members of Oklahoma’s premier symphony chorus, Canterbury Voices, this ultimate tale of love, revenge and tragedy will keep audiences on the edge of their seats.”
Widely regarded as one of Sondheim’s greatest works, Sweeney Todd premiered on Broadway in 1979, winning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical was revived on Broadway in 2023 starring Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford, while Tim Burton’s 2007 film adaptation starring Johnny Depp introduced the story to a new generation of audiences.
The production features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, a book by Hugh Wheeler and is based on Christopher Bond’s adaptation of the Victorian tale. Jan McDaniel serves as music director, with choreography by Ashlyn Adams.
Performances run Tuesday through Saturday at 7:30 pm, with matinees Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm. An ASL-interpreted performance will be offered Saturday, Aug. 1, at 2 pm.
