After graduating from the University of Oklahoma College of Law, Dameon Allensworth has given up his legal practice to live the life of a struggling country music songwriter in Nashville, Tenn.
He spent his spare time writing songs in college and being in the band Briar Branch Road, which gained a fan base throughout Oklahoma and Texas.
After completing law school in 2005, he joined the firm Heron, Sweet, Fox & Trout, P.C., in Oklahoma City, but just couldn’t keep music off of his mind.
“After about a year, (practicing law) was just so unsatisfactory to me,” he said. “I couldn’t wait to get home to start writing songs. I couldn’t wait for the weekends to get out to the clubs to play. It was something I really needed to do.”
MAKING THE MOVE
It was at this point that he decided to go solo and make the move to Nashville.
Allensworth loaded his belongings into a U-Haul on Feb. 28, ready to try his luck in country music’s most competitive songwriting scene. To make up for the loss of income, Allensworth has taken a substitute-teaching job.
“I want to have the time to sort of focus on my craft and I want to keep a little bit of that hungry aspect to it. I think if you get too comfortable, it gets too easy to sort of not be out there every day pounding the pavement,” he said. “Chris Willard
