An Edmond family will be featured on the third-season premiere of A&E's "Hoarders" on Monday.
Three million Americans, including many Oklahomans, struggle with a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder known as "hoarding," which is marked by a need to acquire and keep things, even if the items are worthless, hazardous or unsanitary. A Moore family was featured on the popular television series last season.
Terry Humphrey, the director of the city of Edmond's code enforcement division, contributed to a state study on hoarding last year which looked into the death of Kitty Lewis. An Oklahoma City woman, Lewis lived for years in a home that had been deemed uninhabitable by county officials, before dying alone. As a result of that experience, Humphrey participated in the Labor Day "Hoarders" episode.
"What we need to realize is that this is not just a problem occurring somewhere else, in another state, but it's happening right here, in our small towns, in urban areas, in communities all across Oklahoma," said Humphrey.
The episode airs at 8 p.m.
