As evidence, the National Center for Science
Education recently pointed out that two university departments in
Oklahoma stepped back to Scopes monkey trial territory to defend
evolutions honorable status in higher education.
The
University of Central Oklahoma and Southwestern Oklahoma State
University have separate, if equally unyielding, statements on the
importance of teaching evolution a move deemed necessary despite the
deaths of several anti-science state bills in recent years.
Judging
by an excerpt from the SWOSU science departments mission statement,
speculation is for liberal arts majors: We are a science department, so
we do not teach alternative hypotheses or philosophically deduced
theories that cannot be tested rigorously.
In the survival of the fittest theory, evolution still dominates.
