Norman depicted in national comic book

The University of Oklahoma's Bizzell Library is featured on the cover of a new comic book from Oni Press.

"Local" is a 12-issue comic miniseries created by Brian Wood and Ryan Kelly. Each issue acts as a stand-alone story with "Megan" serving as the common character throughout.

In the just-out issue nine, Megan gets word that her mother has just died. She then discovers a 30-year-old photo of her parents standing in front of Bizzell Library. She decides to travel to Norman to experience her parents' college town and to re-create the photo with her boyfriend.

Annette Price, co-owner of Speeding Bullet Comics in Norman, worked closely with the creators to help capture the city's identity.

"Introducing Brian to Norman was much like when a friend visits town for the first time, except their schedule meant a trip to Norman was out of the question," Price said in a press release.

Taking close 100 photos for the creators, Price included pictures of Norman landmarks and landscapes in order to provide accurate details for the illustrator.

"Brian already had a good idea of the types of settings he wanted for his story," she said. "For instance, he wanted to use a restaurant or coffee shop where Megan's parents may have gone 30 years ago. The Mont worked beautifully due to its classic imagery, long history in Norman and proximity to campus."
