Oklahoma City shop hosts SchlegelFest

Bike on over to the second annual SchlegelFest, a day filled with bicycles, giveaways and outdoor family fun.

The Sunday event came about formally last year as Schlegel Bicycles celebrated its 20th anniversary, said Jessica Herford, the shop's office manager. The event was popular among local cyclists, drawing more than 600 visitors, she said.

Festivalgoers will learn simple bike maintenance techniques, while young riders will learn safety tips, Herford said. Vendors will show their newest bicycle products, and metro bicycle clubs are expected to attend to recruit members and educate riders on the opportunities of cycling in a group. While adults are perusing the booths and speaking with spokespeople, kids can exercise their legs in a moon bounce or have their faces painted.

PUBLIC INTEREST
Herford said the public's interest in cycling has shifted to quicker gears in recent years because of triathlons and the formation of new cycling groups.

"(Cycling) has grown a lot because of awareness," she said. "There are group rides, racing, and whether you're a beginner or a professional, there's an opportunity in Oklahoma City."

The 1 to 4 p.m. event is free and pedals off outside SchlegelFest, 900 N. Broadway. For more information, call 232-4040.
