Motorists traveling through one of Oklahoma City’s busiest intersections should prepare for several nights of road closures beginning Sunday, June 21, as work ramps up on the May Avenue bridge replacement project.
The City of Oklahoma City announced that overnight closures on Northwest Expressway will be necessary to allow crews to safely demolish and remove portions of the existing May Avenue bridge.
Westbound NW Expressway will be completely closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on:
- Sunday, June 21
- Monday, June 22
Eastbound NW Expressway will be completely closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on:
- Tuesday, June 23
- Wednesday, June 24
Drivers are encouraged to plan alternate routes and expect delays during the overnight construction periods.
The closures mark a significant step in the City’s two-year, $15 million May Avenue bridge replacement project. In addition, traffic on May Avenue at NW Expressway has already been shifted to a temporary asphalt detour as of June 18. A temporary traffic signal will direct traffic through the intersection for the duration of construction.
The project will completely replace the existing bridge and transform the interchange into a diverging diamond design, a traffic configuration intended to improve safety, reduce congestion and increase mobility through the heavily traveled corridor.
Along with the new bridge structure, the project includes ramp improvements, upgraded traffic signals, enhanced street lighting and aesthetic upgrades.
Construction is expected to continue for approximately two years.
Funding for the project comes through a partnership between the City of Oklahoma City, an Association of Central Oklahoma Governments (ACOG) grant, the City’s 2017 Better Streets, Safer City bond program and Street Development Fees.
